Date: Wed, 10 Jul 2002 11:16:37 -0400 From: Wendell Piez Subject: Jobs Subcommittee report My report is pretty brief. The Jobs Subcommittee didn't rest on its laurels after last year's conference, but went forward and implemented a Humanities Computing Jobs Database, which you can see on the ACH site at http://maple.cc.kcl.ac.uk/ach_jobs/. Credit for the hard work should go to John Bradley and to Julia and Matt especially, though we all had a hand in the design. We think the database is pretty nice for something that aims to be functional. Please use it, recommend it, and record entries in it. At present, Julia is playing the role of database arbiter, entering listings she sees on public lists and sites and vetting and posting any listings that are sent to us. (After building and testing the db we did rest on our laurels a little.) The other bit of news is that Julia has generously taken on the role of co-chair, replacing Matt, who has had many other obligations the last few months. As of the last few weeks we've been revving up for the mentoring activities at this year's conference. As expected, we are attracting less attention than we did last year. We expect next year in Georgia, however, to be different. Please let me know of any questions or feedback you might have! Respectfully, Wendell Date: Tue, 16 Jul 2002 11:37:55 -0400 From: Julia Flanders Subject: addendum to the jobs report This is just a brief addendum to Wendell's report on the jobs committee, with some factoids about the jobs database. There have been 57 entries since October 15, 2001, or about 6 new entries per month The entries are mostly culled from Humanist, AHDS-L, EAD-L, and TEI-L As far as I know, no (or very few) entries were made "free range"--all were entered by the ACH jobs editor Despite the ACH's kind offer of support for a student worker, the volume has not yet required it; ACH jobs editor can handle it. There are no statistics available at this time on usage of the database, but this would be useful and the jobs committee will look into this in the coming year. Suggestions for additional ways to publicize the database and encourage people to use it (both to enter new jobs and to use it to find job listings) are very welcome. Respectfully submitted, Julia Flanders
